この度、LOWWでは2年ぶりの開催となりますニューヨークを拠点に活動するニコラス・テイラーの展覧会を開催します。
ご存知の通り、ジャン＝ミッシェル・バスキアの盟友として、共にバンドGRAYで活動し当時のNYシーンに多大な影響を与えました。現在もGRAYはオリジナルメンバーでもあるマイケル・ホルマンと活動し、今なお精力的に活動しています。これまでニコラスは、バスキアとのフォトセッションを中心とした作品が世界中の美術館にて紹介されてきましたが、今回は新作として取り組んでいるミクスト・メディアシリーズを国内では初めてご紹介できることを我々も嬉しく思っております。アメリカ国内に限らず、世界中が不安定の情勢を抱えてる現在において、彼が新しい表現として取り組んでいるシリーズ”AREALISM”、ぜひご覧になってください。

LOWW is pleased to present the first exhibition in two years by New York-based artist Nicholas Taylor.
As you know, he was an ally of Jean-Michel Basquiat and together they played in the band called GRAY, which had a huge influence on the New York scene at the time. Today, GRAY is still active/play with Michael Holman, who is also an original member of the band. Nicholas's work has been exhibited in museums around the world, particularly his photo sessions with Basquiat.We are delighted to be able to present his new mixed media series for the first time in Japan. We invite you to see his new series ‘AREALISM’, a new form of expression in the current climate of instability, not only in the USA but also in the rest of the world.

1977年、ニューヨークに移住。1979年1月、友人のジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアと初期のヘッドショット・シリーズを撮影する。1979年、バスキアのバンド「Gray」に参加（ギター）。Grayは、当時のニューヨークの「No Wave」シーンに関連した非常にユニークなサウンド志向のバンドであった。GrayはThe Lounge LizardsやDNAといったバンドの前座を務め、CBGB's、Tier 3、Hurrahs、the Moutiqueといったニューヨークのクラブで演奏していた。Hurrahs、Mudd Club.、Squat Theaterなどのニューヨークのクラブで、ラウンジ・リザーズやDNAのようなバンドのオープニングを務めました。ニックはバスキア氏の側近という幸運に恵まれ、1981年から84年にかけて、バスキア氏のクロスビー・ストリートのロフトでジャン＝ミシェルが何百もの作品を描き、それを目撃していました。 1982年、ニューヨークのスクワット・シアターで行ったコラボレーションで、バスキアは彼を「DJハイ・プリースト」と名付けます。また、82年には「テープループDJ」で、イーストビレッジのクラブ・ネグリルで、アフリカ・バンバータ、DJクール・ハーク、ジャジー・Jとともにマイケル・ホルマンが毎週開催するヒップホップイベントでオープニングを飾ります。ハイ・プリーストは、ニューヨーク・シティ・ブレイカーズのDJとして、ソウル・ソニック・フォースやグランド・マスター・フラッシュのオープニングを担当。1983年ソーホーのザ・キッチンで、マックス・ローチをドラムに迎えたバンド「エステート・フレッシュ」のDJとして、ファブ・ファイブ・フレディに抜擢されます。マイケル・ホルマンとニックは "Sounds of... "を共同プロデュースし、2010年にマイケル・ホルマンとのレーベル "Plush Safe Records "からGrayのファーストLPをリリース。2013には”Shade of…”, 2024年には”LAST OF THE BEATS ”などリリースも多数。

Born December 8, 1953 in Belleville, Illinois USA
Moved to New York in 1977. 1n January 1979 he photographs an early series of headshots with his friend Jean-Michel Basquiat. In1979 Nick joined Basquiat’s band “Gray” (guitar). Gray was a very unique sound oriented band associated with the “No Wave” scene in New York City at that time. Gray opened for bands like The Lounge Lizards and DNA in New York City clubs such as CBGB’s, Tier 3. Hurrahs and the Mudd Club., Squat Theater. Nick had the good fortune of being a close confidant to Mr. Basquiat, and from 1981-’84, Nick watched Jean-Michel paint and draw hundreds of works in Basquait’s Crosby Street loft. In 1982 Basquiat named him “DJ High Priest” for a collaboration they did at the Squat Theater in New York City. Also in ’82, with ‘tape loop-djing’, he opened in Michael Holman’s weekly Hip Hop event with Africa Bambatta, Cool Herc and Jazzy J at Club Negril in the East Village. High Priest was the DJ for the New York City Breakers opening for acts Soul Sonic Force and Grand Master Flash. At The Kitchen in Soho 1983, Fab Five Freddy selected him for his djing skills in the band ‘Estate Fresh’ which included Max Roach on drums. Nick co-produced “Sounds of…” Gray’s first LP released in 2010 with Michael Holman on their label “Plush Safe Records”. He has released a number of albums, including “Shade of...” in 2013 and “Last of the Beats” in 2024.
